Senate Opens Leadership Race to All Senators by Scrapping Tenure Rule
The Senate has reversed a rule that barred first-time senators from contesting its top offices. All elected members can now run for Senate President and Deputy Senate President in 2027. Critics said the earlier amendment, which required eight years of continuous service, limited democratic choice. Supporters argued it ensured experienced leadership. With the rule removed, the contest is open to every senator, regardless of term. Lawmakers also approved changes to committee meeting times, plenary schedules, suspension procedures and committee sizes. A new committee on reparation and repatriation was created. The Clerk of the Senate will update the standing rules accordingly.
