Pre-dawn Blaze Destroys Shop Goods in Ilorin; Fire Service Urges Electrical Safety

Pre-dawn Blaze Destroys Shop Goods in Ilorin; Fire Service Urges Electrical Safety

A pre-dawn fire broke out at about 4:56 a.m. on Sunday at No. 28 Ijoro Street, off Asa-Dam Road in Ilorin. The mixed-use building, which includes a two-bedroom flat and seven shops, saw flames consume one shop and destroy grinding machines, foodstuffs and other valuables before firefighters brought the blaze under control. The Kwara State Fire Service confirmed a likely power surge as the cause of the fire. Officials praised the rapid response of emergency crews, noting that swift action prevented the flames from spreading to neighbouring shops and the residential section of the building. The Director of the Fire Service urged traders and residents to prioritise electrical safety by using surge protectors, avoiding overloaded sockets and conducting routine checks on wiring. He also stressed the importance of accessible fire extinguishers to tackle small outbreaks early. This incident follows recent fire outbreaks in Ilorin, including a vehicle fire at E-Phoenix Hotel and another shop blaze in Ita-Ogunbo earlier this year.

But what practical steps can owners in aging mixed-use blocks take to check electrical wiring?

You're right to ask about safety steps, though I wonder if reminding owners about proper wiring checks is enough.

It's surprising the building's electrical systems weren't inspected sooner, given the risks in older mixed-use structures.

I'm not convinced routine inspections would stop all blazes; sometimes these incidents happen despite precautions.
