Debunking the Goodluck Jonathan and Akinwunmi Ambode Candidacy Rumors
Every election season, unfounded stories claim that former President Goodluck Jonathan will seek the presidency and that Akinwunmi Ambode will run for Lagos governor. Both men have made clear they have no plans to contest. In 2022, a Fulani group bought an APC nomination form for Dr. Jonathan without his consent. He issued a statement calling it insulting and untrue. Despite this, rumours resurfaced ahead of the 2026 elections, even though Mrs. Patience Jonathan publicly ruled out his return. Supporters once demonstrated outside his office, but Dr. Jonathan reiterated he would only consider politics if he chose to—and most demonstrators didn’t even have voter cards. Recently, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria advised him to stay out of politics to protect his reputation. Similarly, no one from Mr. Ambode’s camp has shown interest in a Lagos governorship bid. Yet the same hoax keeps cycling every four years. Expect it to appear again before 2030.
