WhatsApp Introduces Usernames for Phone Number Privacy
WhatsApp is rolling out a username system that lets you connect with new contacts without sharing your personal phone number. You can reserve a unique handle now, with a wider release planned later this year. A phone number will still be needed to register and maintain your account, but swapping it for a username helps keep your number private when reaching out to classmates, neighbours or event acquaintances. WhatsApp’s Vice President of Product explains that a phone number is deeply personal and tied to many parts of life. Usernames give you control over who sees your number from the start.
