Women’s Coalition Warns of Female Exclusion in 2027 Primaries
A coalition of women-led civil society organisations has raised the alarm over the low number of female aspirants emerging in party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections. They warn that patterns seen so far risk undoing gains in women’s political participation. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja under the theme “Broken Promises. Missing Women,” the group pointed out that early results from the ruling party’s primaries contradict public pledges by President Tinubu and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to promote gender inclusion. Only a handful of states, including Katsina, Edo and Imo, have produced successful female candidates so far. The coalition urged all party leaders to use the remaining primaries of APC, Labour Party, ADC, SDP, NDC and AA to nominate more women. They highlighted obstacles such as screening disqualifications and consensus withdrawals that have sidelined many aspirants and stressed that real commitments must translate into actual candidacies.
