How Local Governments Can Build Solar Microgrids to Power Communities
Nigeria can run two grids: the national network and smaller solar microgrids managed by local governments. In Ijesa land, six LGs could generate 330 MW at peak by deploying ten thousand 33 kW solar plants. Each mini plant can produce about 165 kWh daily and serve forty homes when the sun shines. At an estimated ₦15 million per plant, local investors can earn steady returns by supplying prepaid meters. LGs only need to handle meter rollout and maintenance. For solar downtime, LGs can combine batteries, hydro, wind or pumped storage. This model can scale to all local governments. Universities should sponsor research into better energy storage.
