Lessons in Leadership and Deterrence from the Book of Esther
I recently read the first chapter of the Book of Esther. It tells of King Xerxes and Queen Vashti in the grand city of Shush. Xerxes ruled 127 provinces from India to Sudan and held a lavish banquet to display his wealth. During the feast, the king asked Queen Vashti to appear before his guests. She refused. His advisors saw this as an insult to the throne and urged a firm response. Vashti was stripped of her title and banished to maintain royal authority. This episode shows that clear laws and consistent penalties deter would-be offenders. Leaders must apply rules fairly to preserve order and respect. A sign of weakness can invite rebellion. Today, Nigeria faces a similar challenge. Compromise in law enforcement leads to disorder. For any nation to thrive, its system of laws must be enforced without bias or favoritism.
