Djibouti’s Long-Serving President Secures Sixth Term with 97.8% Victory
Ismail Guelleh, in power since 1999, won 97.8% of ballots in Friday’s presidential election. His only challenger, Mohamed Farah Samatar, managed just 2.2% of the vote. Early tallies gave Guelleh a commanding lead and he celebrated on social media before official results were confirmed. At 78 years old, he begins a sixth consecutive term, extending his 27-year rule. Under his leadership, Djibouti has become a key international hub. The country hosts military bases from France, the United States, China, Japan and Italy, thanks to its strategic location.
