Anambra Assembly Passes Landmark Violence Against Persons Law

Anambra Assembly Passes Landmark Violence Against Persons Law

The Anambra State House of Assembly has approved the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Bill 2026 after its third reading. Sponsored by the Onitsha North One lawmaker, the bill was amended at the Committee of the Whole stage before final passage. The new law targets the sharing of compromising images and videos and aims to protect residents—both men and women—from various forms of violence. It builds on existing cybercrime legislation by addressing personal and intimate privacy violations. According to the Speaker, the law will take effect on May 15, 2026, giving state authorities time to prepare for implementation and enforcement.
