When Second Chances Invite Betrayal

Last month, my friend left his Abuja building site in the care of a trusted worker. Within a day, he saw multiple Zenith Bank debit alerts totalling over ₦150,000. The worker blamed a family emergency, so my friend decided not to involve the police. He moved him to the Kaduna site, covered transport and meals, and even bought him a new phone to stay in touch. Soon after, the worker sold bags of cement, lied about losing the phone and fell into debt again. Each excuse was another betrayal. The lesson is clear: trust must be earned, not given blindly. Second chances can become permission to hurt you again.

Yes, it's natural to feel uneasy about property safety. Spot reliable references, set clear check-ins, and trust your instincts.

It's odd that over ₦150,000 went missing so quickly without any red flags before the worker's excuse surfaced.

I'm not convinced keeping this private was the best move; sometimes involving authorities deters repeat offenders immediately.

Next time, set up transaction limits and daily alerts, and vet workers with small test tasks before granting full access.
