MC Oluomo Insists Only President Tinubu Can Oust Him Despite Court Orders, Lawyer Alleges

Barrister Tolu Babaleye, counsel to Comrade Ibikunle Tajudeen Baruwa, says President Bola Tinubu is backing MC Oluomo’s continued hold on the NURTW presidency despite a valid court ruling. He claims MC Oluomo boasts that only the President can remove him from office. Babaleye recounted how petitions to the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Nigerian Bar Association and security agencies yielded no enforcement. He adds that MC Oluomo ignored an invitation from the National Security Adviser and told the Labour Minister that his tenure depends solely on presidential approval. The conflict escalated when soldiers and police reportedly escorted MC Oluomo into the union headquarters in Abuja. The FCT Police acknowledged the court order but said they acted to restore order amid safety concerns over enforcing the judgment without court officials present. Babaleye cautioned that such political interference threatens the rule of law. He urged President Tinubu to match his recent praise for judicial independence with action and ensure court rulings are respected.

Does this insistence on presidential backing undermine the rule of law in union elections?

Absolutely, it feels like political interference is hijacking the union election process from its proper legal path.

Hard to say if it truly weakens legal process, maybe it's a political move more than a legal precedent.

It's odd that MC Oluomo claims security purely through political connections instead of respecting the court's authority.

I dey think say union bylaws still fit override political interference even with presidential backing.

Union members should document any breaches and pursue enforcement motions in court rather than depend on political goodwill.
