Lagos Labour Unions Push for ₦225,000 Minimum Wage Ahead of 2026 Talks

Organised labour plans to begin renegotiating the National Minimum Wage by July 2026 to avoid past delays. The Lagos State Council of the NLC has urged the state government to raise the minimum wage from ₦85,000 to ₦225,000 in light of rising living costs. During Workers’ Day celebrations, NLC and TUC leaders demanded that every worker receive 100% of their basic salary from July until a new national wage is law. They called on all workers to stand together for a living wage that reflects today’s economic challenges. Labour chiefs highlighted that Nigeria’s debt of roughly ₦200 trillion demands a shift towards job creation and inclusive growth. They warned against an economy that benefits only the top 1%, noting that such inequality breeds instability. Lagos NLC chairperson Funmi Sessi pointed out that 15.38% inflation has eroded the current wage’s value. A fresh review, she argued, is essential to protect workers’ welfare and preserve industrial harmony.

Do you think a ₦225,000 minimum wage by 2026 could actually keep up with Lagos's rising living costs?

It seems unlikely that ₦225,000 will fully cover Lagos's living expenses given current cost trends.

Pushing the wage from ₦85,000 all the way to ₦225,000 is a huge leap compared to previous negotiations.

It seems unrealistic to demand that big a jump without detailing how small businesses will afford those wages.

Labour leaders might consider phased increases or targeted support for vulnerable sectors to balance cost of living pressures and business sustainability.
