Court Rejects El-Rufai’s Bid to Relax Bail Conditions in Phone-Tapping Trial

Court Rejects El-Rufai’s Bid to Relax Bail Conditions in Phone-Tapping Trial

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai failed to secure a review of his ₦100 million bail conditions in the phone-tapping case filed by the State Security Service. The Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed his application, ruling that the existing bail terms were reasonable and necessary to ensure his attendance at trial. El-Rufai had asked for more flexible surety requirements after failing to meet conditions tied to property ownership and salary evidence. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik found no merit in the defense’s claims about the impossibility of securing properties in Abuja’s highbrow districts. The case is adjourned until September 22, after the prosecution closed its case with two witnesses and the defense signaled a no-case submission.
