Lagos Shuts Down 12 Hotels and Malls Over Lift Safety Breaches

Lagos Shuts Down 12 Hotels and Malls Over Lift Safety Breaches

In a major enforcement on April 30, the Lagos State Safety Commission sealed 12 hotels, shopping complexes, and residential blocks in Lekki Phase 1 and parts of Ikeja. These properties failed to register their elevators for mandatory inspections and routine maintenance. Commission Chief Scientific Officer Sovi Tijani, speaking for Director-General Lanre Mojola, said repeated notices went unheeded. Some owners even refused to collect official letters or obstructed enforcement staff. Tijani warned that poorly maintained lifts endanger lives and property. He urged all building managers to register their systems and adhere strictly to safety regulations. The commission will sustain crackdowns until compliance is universal.

You think shutting them will change long-term habits, or would regular inspections work better for lasting safety improvements?

Property owners should schedule elevator inspections regularly and display valid certificates to avoid sudden shutdowns and legal hassles.
