Legal Challenge Hits FCT Poll Tribunal Composition Ahead of Verdict
A fresh dispute has emerged as Dr. Paul Moses Ogidi urges the suspension of the FCT Area Council Election Petition Tribunal’s judgment. He argues the panel was not set up in line with Section 135(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, because it lacks a High Court judge. Ogidi says his team wrote to the FCT Chief Judge on April 10 and to the Chief Justice of Nigeria on May 21 seeking reconstitution. He claims neither office has replied. He also alerted international bodies, including the United Nations, European Union, US Embassy and British High Commission, about the alleged irregularities. He warns that any verdict delivered by a tribunal whose jurisdiction is in doubt could be struck down. He is calling for immediate suspension of the judgment, urgent intervention from top judicial authorities, full compliance with the Electoral Act and resolution of all jurisdictional questions before a final ruling. Ogidi stresses this issue goes beyond his case. It, he says, affects public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral justice system and the integrity of the democratic process.
