Afenifere Demands Thorough Investigation of Fayose’s Kidnap Allegations in Oyo State

Afenifere Demands Thorough Investigation of Fayose’s Kidnap Allegations in Oyo State — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Afenifere has called on Nigeria’s security agencies to thoroughly probe former Ekiti Governor Fayose’s claim that recent kidnappings in Oyo State were driven by political motives. The pan-Yoruba group warned that in the lead-up to elections, genuine security threats should not be dismissed as mere campaign rhetoric. It urged investigators to consider how politics, economic interests and local collaborators may intersect in acts of kidnapping. The organisation noted reports of displaced communities followed by illegal mining operations, suggesting criminal networks and compromised security operatives could be involved. It said foreign nationals arrested for illegal mining should form part of a wider security review. Afenifere also defended the media’s role in highlighting public safety issues and renewed its call for state police reform to improve local intelligence and strengthen Nigeria’s response to growing security threats.

While political motives can't be ruled out, we must be careful not to dismiss genuine crime victims' experiences as mere election stunts.
