Driving Ondo’s Blue Economy: A Case for a Coastal Development Agency
The renewed focus on the Dangote-backed Olokola Free Trade Zone presents Ondo State with a chance to redefine its coastal economy. Beyond industry and infrastructure, this project can unlock fisheries, aquaculture, maritime transport, tourism, renewable energy and more. To maximise these benefits, Ondo needs a dedicated Coastal Development Agency established by law. Such an institution can coordinate investments, protect host communities, promote sustainable practices and build investor confidence. Preparation is key. The state should train indigenes in maritime administration, port management, coastal engineering, environmental protection and Blue Economy policy. Local expertise will ensure that opportunities boost livelihoods rather than being imported. As Olokola, the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway and other seaport plans advance, stakeholders must push the Ondo State House of Assembly to pass legislation for a Coastal Development Agency. Strong institutions today will secure a thriving coastal economy for generations.
