America’s Overreach: Why Nigeria Must Be Cautious

I am deeply concerned by the arrogance of American leaders. They act as if the US is the world government, issuing threats from Venezuela to Iran and meddling in Colombia, Mexico, China and beyond. Back home, America faces mass shootings, poverty, racism and homelessness. Its leaders should focus on solving domestic problems instead of provoking wars, violating international law and undermining global peace. As Nigerians, we should neither be enemies nor uncritical allies of the US. We must protect our sovereignty, maintain balanced relations and turn to trusted partners when we need support.

Focusing on strengthening our democracy, economy, and security at home could be a more effective response than critiquing American foreign policy.
