Florida Couple Fined and Banned After Leaving Six-Month-Old Unattended on Beach

Florida Couple Fined and Banned After Leaving Six-Month-Old Unattended on Beach — 1 of 2
1 / 2

An American couple has avoided prosecution after agreeing to fines, community service and a county-wide ban for leaving their six-month-old daughter unattended on a Florida beach. Under a deferred prosecution deal, each parent will pay a $1,000 fine, complete 25 hours of community service and attend a parenting class. They are also barred from entering Walton County, where the incident occurred. Last October, beachgoers at Miramar Beach found the infant alone under a tent while her parents walked off with their other children. Authorities warned that the baby could have suffocated or been injured and said further violations would reopen the case.

How do you think leaving an infant unattended impacts future beach rules or parental responsibility in Florida communities?

It's startling they avoided prosecution despite risking the child's safety and were only fined and given a temporary beach ban.

I'm not convinced a county ban and community service truly deter negligent parents more than a short jail term might.
