Tinubu Urges Boost for STEM and TVET at Akanu Ibiam Polytechnic Convocation

Tinubu Urges Boost for STEM and TVET at Akanu Ibiam Polytechnic Convocation

President Bola Tinubu described Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as crucial to national development and his Renewed Hope Agenda. He said these disciplines will equip young Nigerians with the skills needed for the 21st-century economy. Polytechnics, he added, should be seen as complementary to universities rather than secondary institutions. The Federal Ministry of Education is driving reforms to improve access, quality and industry linkages in tertiary education. The government plans targeted support to stabilise funding and mobilise resources under its Renewed Hope Agenda. At the same ceremony, the Polytechnic’s Rector, Dr. Felix Attah, highlighted low student enrolment and erratic power supply as key challenges. He said accreditation of new programmes is underway to boost enrolment, and noted that existing hostels remain largely unoccupied as many students prefer off-campus housing.

I'm not convinced that slogans are enough; without clear benchmarks and accountability, more funding might just pad budgets without improving skills.

Partnering with industry experts for internships and workshops could bridge classroom learning and real workplace demands across STEM and TVET programs.
