Over 5 Million Electricity Customers Still Await Prepaid Meters in Nigeria

New data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission shows that 5.1 million of the 12.31 million active electricity customers had no prepaid meter as of February 2026. That means an estimated 41% of users still rely on estimated billing. Metering coverage rose slightly from 57.93% in January to 58.57% in February after the deployment of nearly 122,000 new meters. A total of 7.21 million consumers now have prepaid meters installed nationwide. Among distributors, Eko Disco and Ikeja Electric lead with over 87% metering rates. Abuja Disco follows at 79%. At the bottom, Yola Disco has the lowest rate of 31.86%, with Jos, Kano and Kaduna also under 36%.
