SERAP Demands Answers from Akpabio and Abbas over ₦1.3bn Phantom Council Funding
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas to explain why over ₦1.3 billion was allocated to a presidential council the Presidency says does not exist. In a Freedom of Information request, SERAP wants all documents relating to the ₦1,302,978,784 line item for the so-called Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council. The group is urging the National Assembly to use its constitutional oversight powers to investigate how the allocation passed into law, who approved it and whether it came from the Executive’s initial proposal or was added by legislators. SERAP warns that failing to disclose the requested records within seven days will lead to legal action. The rights organisation says transparency on this allocation is vital to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s budget process and ensure lawmakers fulfil their constitutional duty to scrutinise public spending.
