Retired Officers Block Abuja Villa Gate in Pension Scheme Protest

Retired Officers Block Abuja Villa Gate in Pension Scheme Protest

Retired police personnel and their families, under the Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria, blocked one of the gates of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday to denounce the Contributory Pension Scheme. They carried placards with messages such as “End CPS” and “Police dey work, PenCom dey chop.” The group wants President Bola Tinubu to sign the Police Exit Bill passed by the National Assembly last December, which would remove police officers from the current pension framework. In a video shared by a national television network, former ASP Nurudeen Dahiru described the CPS as “fraudulent, illegal, inhumane and obnoxious.” He said retirees who served 35 years now struggle to feed their families and lack funds for housing and medical care. CSP Raphael Irowainu (retd), National Coordinator of the forum, noted that other security services have already exited the scheme. This protest follows earlier demonstrations by retired officers at the National Assembly and the Force Headquarters over low pensions and unpaid benefits.

What do you think triggered retired officers to block Abuja Villa instead of other protests for pension grievances?

Why focus on Abuja Villa gate—was it for visibility or proximity to power?

Good point about Abuja Villa. It's the power hub, so blocking there likely seemed the swiftest way to force attention.

It seems unusual that uniformed retirees choose the Presidential Villa gate for this protest rather than engaging local pension offices directly.

Blocking national leadership access rarely speeds policy change, it might just create more gridlock than actual progress.

A more targeted strategy could involve petitioning pension board officials or organizing town halls with lawmakers to address Contributory Pension Scheme concerns.
