Legal Scholar Rejects Dalung’s Corruption Claims, Defends INEC Chair Amupitan
Dr. John B. Mahwel, a legal scholar and University of Jos alumnus, has publicly defended INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan’s integrity. He described former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung’s allegations as “false, misleading and unacceptable.” Mahwel, who both studied under and later taught alongside Amupitan, said he felt compelled to set the record straight. He highlighted Amupitan’s merit-based support for students and his reputation for academic fairness. Addressing claims of manipulated results in the 2009 session, Mahwel explained that administrative staff errors—not Amupitan—led to discrepancies. He said those issues were uncovered and resolved under Amupitan’s deanship, demonstrating institutional integrity. Mahwel cautioned against the politicisation of sensitive academic and electoral matters. He urged public figures to verify facts before speaking, warning that unfounded statements could erode trust in key national institutions.
