FG Defends Painful Reforms as Key to Nigeria’s Sustainable Economic Growth
At the maiden Solid Minerals Excellence Awards in Abuja, Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake said the current economic pain is an essential step toward a resilient and diversified economy. He outlined bold reforms under the Renewed Hope programme, targeting corruption, weak institutions and overreliance on oil. The ministry has digitised licences, expanded the Mining Marshals initiative with over 2,000 personnel and cracked down on illegal operations to boost transparency and investor confidence. Alake stressed the need for domestic mineral processing to spur industrialisation, job creation and technology transfer. He likened the reforms to those that transformed Lagos State’s revenue and institutions, arguing that long-term national interests must guide policy over short-term politics. The awards ceremony recognised firms and individuals for their contributions to innovation, sustainability and growth in the solid minerals sector.
