Should Accused Public Officials Resign Before an Investigation Is Complete?

I believe the presumption of innocence should come before public pressure for an accused person to resign. Resignation may be necessary where someone can influence or obstruct an investigation. But where they hold no such power, forcing them out before the facts are established can cause lasting damage. If the investigation later clears the person, their reputation, career and livelihood may already have been ruined. False accusations can be deeply damaging, whether at work or in public life.
