Binance Appoints Sammy Mutua as GM for Africa to Lead Crypto Expansion
Sammy Mutua has been named General Manager for Africa at Binance. He brings over two decades of experience from leading mobile money and card network projects at M-Pesa Africa, Visa Sub-Saharan Africa and Letshego Group. Based in Nairobi, Mutua will drive regional strategy, market development, regulatory engagement and partnerships across Sub-Saharan Africa. His mandate reflects Binance’s intent to work closely with central banks, startups and telcos rather than simply appoint a figurehead. On-chain activity in Sub-Saharan Africa reached $205 billion between July 2024 and June 2025, up 52% year-on-year. In Nigeria, 74% of crypto holders are under 30, and Gen Z users on Binance more than doubled in two years. Mutua emphasises “building in a way that is aligned with local realities.” He will collaborate with regulators and communities to strengthen infrastructure, compliance and trust as crypto adoption accelerates.
