A Federal High Court in Enugu has sentenced 24-year-old palm kernel dealer Iziga Jude Ikechukwu, known as Easy-Money, to one year in prison for mutilating Naira notes during his birthday celebration. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arraigned Ikechukwu on March 26, 2026, on a one-count charge of destroying currency worth ₦81,700. He pleaded guilty and was given an option to pay a ₦300,000 fine. The court also ordered the forfeiture of the recovered ₦81,700 to the Federal Government. Ikechukwu was arrested on February 28, 2026, after a viral video showed him dancing on banknotes at a hotel in Enugu‐Ezike.

I'm with you—jailing someone for a year over party shredding of notes sounds quite over the top!

A whole year behind bars for some shredded notes? That punishment feels like using a hammer to crack a nut.

Perhaps public awareness campaigns about the consequences of defacing currency would prevent similar incidents more effectively than harsh jail terms.
