Abia Governor Approves Automatic Lecturing Posts and Scholarships for ABSU First-Class Graduates

Abia Governor Approves Automatic Lecturing Posts and Scholarships for ABSU First-Class Graduates

At Abia State University’s combined 30th–32nd convocation, Governor Alex Otti directed that all first-class graduates be retained as graduate assistants upon completing their NYSC service. He extended the same offer to top students with a minimum 4.25 CGPA. The governor also approved postgraduate scholarships up to the doctorate level at any Nigerian public university. Graduates must accept the teaching appointments to qualify for the scholarship. To further support employment, the Head of Service will identify up to 100 vacancies in critical fields—Education, Computer Science, Statistics, and Health—to absorb outstanding graduates after NYSC. Additionally, ₦200 million has been set aside to fund 100 graduates with innovative business ideas in agriculture, ICT, and clean energy. Proposals are due by April 30, 2026. Governor Otti presented ₦5 million to the overall best graduate, Oluchi Etumsi, and congratulated honorary award recipients. He reaffirmed his commitment to investing in education and empowering youth in Abia State.

I appreciate the good intent, but ABSU may struggle with funding, supervision, and resources if they employ every first-class graduate.

It sounds generous, but I wonder if automatic lecturing posts could water down academic standards or strain university budgets in the long run.

It's great for first-class graduates, but what about other talented students who just missed that 4.25 cutoff? Feels a bit unfair.

ABSU might consider mentorship programs and teaching workshops for these new assistants to ensure both research excellence and high teaching standards.
