US DOJ Moves to Revoke Nigerian’s Citizenship Over Terrorism and Identity Fraud
The US Department of Justice announced on May 8 that it filed denaturalization actions against 12 individuals, including Nigerian national George Oyakhire, in various US district courts. They are accused of providing material support to a terrorist group, committing war crimes, and sexually abusing a minor. According to the DOJ, Oyakhire first entered the US under his real name in 1986 but later obtained permanent residency and naturalization under the false identity of Oliver Bennett Oyakhire. His citizenship is now at risk for willful misrepresentation during the immigration process. Under the Immigration and Nationality Act, citizenship obtained through fraud or concealment of material facts can be revoked. DOJ officials say they are accelerating denaturalization actions to restore integrity to the naturalization system. The Office of Immigration Litigation is leading prosecution with support from USCIS and multiple US attorneys’ offices.
