2027 Election: Will Tinubu End Up Running Against Himself?
I have written about how democracy, though still our best option, can be hollow when political actors learn to bend the rules. In Nigeria’s multi-party system, over 18 out of 21 parties are mere extensions of the ruling elite rather than genuine opposition. President Bola Tinubu appears to be exploiting this fragility. From a pliant INEC chair to strategic defections and incentives for governors, he seems to be ensuring that no serious challenger emerges. Rumours of opposition figures being co-opted or sidelined mirror tactics used by other long-serving leaders. If key parties collapse or splinter further, 2027 may end up with Tinubu effectively contesting against himself. Such a scenario would mark one of the least competitive elections in Nigeria’s history, raising deeper questions about the future of our democracy.
