Police Disciplinary Panel Reviews 167 Senior Officers Over Misconduct Allegations

Police Disciplinary Panel Reviews 167 Senior Officers Over Misconduct Allegations

The Nigeria Police Force’s Disciplinary Committee has begun reviewing cases against 167 senior officers over alleged breaches of professional conduct. This follows widespread reports of extortion, rights violations and abuse by officers, including forced money transfers, intrusive phone searches and threats captured in viral videos. The panel, which handles ranks of Assistant Superintendent of Police and above, is holding transparent hearings at Force Headquarters in Abuja before forwarding recommendations to the Police Service Commission. The Inspector-General has reaffirmed that no officer found culpable will be shielded from due process as part of broader reforms to strengthen accountability, discipline and public confidence.

Should we expect an internal panel alone to solve this? Better bring independent observers and clear public reporting.

Citizens should demand regular updates on each case to maintain pressure on the panel and discourage procedural delays.
