Tinubu’s Appointees Exit Lagos 2027 Governorship Race
Three of President Tinubu’s key appointees have bowed out of the Lagos 2027 governorship contest after missing the March 31, 2026 resignation deadline. They are Femi Gbajabiamila, Hakeem Muri-Okunola and Dr. Tunji Alausa. With their departure, the APC ticket is now set to be closely contested by former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, both from Epe. Other notable aspirants include Dr. Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, Rep. Babjimi Benson and Dr. Samuel Ajose. Reports emerged that President Tinubu and some Southwest APC leaders endorsed Hamzat during Eid consultations. Other insiders, however, dismissed the endorsement as misleading, while party stakeholders highlight strong grassroots support for Ambode. Meanwhile, Mr. Tayo Akinmade Ayinde is viewed as a frontrunner for the APC Lagos West senatorial ticket. If Speaker Obasa continues in his role, he could become one of Nigeria’s longest-serving state assembly speakers.
