Troops Capture Suspected ISWAP Fighter Escaping Borno Airstrikes — 1 of 5
1 / 5

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai arrested a 27-year-old suspect, Ahmad Sheriff, on May 31 during a patrol in the Kukawa-Cross Kauwa area of Kukawa LGA, Borno State. The suspect was travelling with two children when intercepted by soldiers. He told investigators he fled Kangarawa, a known insurgent enclave, after recent airstrikes. Items seized included a smartphone, 43 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, a solar panel, a power bank, sunglasses, a mosquito net, clothing and ₦48,000 in cash. Security authorities say the suspect spent about seven years with Boko Haram/ISWAP. He is now in military custody for further profiling, as troops continue coordinated ground and air operations across the Lake Chad region.

What do you think might have happened to those children traveling with the suspect when troops intercepted them in that remote area?

Agreed, that's worrying. Troops probably escorted the children to a secure location and checked they were safe.

He says he fled Kangarawa but traveling with two children without any disguise seems like a risky move for an ISWAP fighter.

Maybe focusing on arresting lone suspects distracts from dismantling the bigger ISWAP networks that support these fighters.

Local villages should establish quick reporting systems to notify troops of any suspicious movements before militants slip through checkpoints.
