Gani vs Abacha: Chagoury Connections and Tinubu’s NADECO Reinvention
In 1995, I joined Gani Fawehinmi at the Hotel Presidential as defense counsel for Ken Saro-Wiwa and other Ogoni leaders. We discovered the hotel was now leased to the Chagoury family. Gani was furious and insisted we leave immediately, calling it an “Abacha hotel.” He firmly believed Chagoury and Abacha were inseparable. It struck me as ironic that a leading NADECO figure—once so vocal against Abacha—would now be linked to his closest associates. Today, Tinubu has redefined what NADECO stands for. He has blurred old boundaries and erased clear categories. I can only imagine how surprised Gani would be to see men like Bayo Onanuga taking orders from Abacha’s bag men.
