Eid-el-Kabir: Ram Prices in Abuja Surge to ₦1.5m Amid Rising Costs
Ram prices in major Abuja livestock markets have jumped sharply ahead of the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebration. Large breeds now fetch up to ₦1.5 million, compared with about ₦700,000 last year. Medium-sized rams go for ₦350,000–₦400,000, while smaller ones cost around ₦230,000–₦250,000. Traders blame inflation, higher transport expenses, insecurity on key routes, and pricier animal feed. Bringing animals from states like Kano and Sokoto has become significantly more expensive. At Zuba Market, buyers negotiated the cheapest ram down to approximately ₦275,000. Economists warn that rising fuel prices, exchange rate shifts, and security challenges in grazing areas are squeezing supply and driving prices higher. Many buyers are delaying purchases in hopes of lower costs as the festival nears. Some families say they may pool funds to afford a ram this year. Nigeria’s inflation rate rose to 15.69% in April 2026, adding further strain on household budgets ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir dates of May 27 and 28.
