Convicted Rapist Mistakenly Freed from UK Prison Flees to Bosnia and Is Convicted in Absentia

Convicted Rapist Mistakenly Freed from UK Prison Flees to Bosnia and Is Convicted in Absentia

A convicted rapist who threatened a woman with a knife in west London has been convicted in his absence after escaping custody due to a prison release error. Bernadin Dedic, 48, faced nine charges including rape and sexual assault. Last February, a court official’s mix-up led to his release from HMP Wormwood Scrubs. He promptly took the Eurostar to Bosnia using his Bosnian passport. This month, Isleworth Crown Court heard the case without Dedic. Jurors found him guilty on all counts. UK authorities now plan extradition proceedings to bring him back for sentencing. HM Courts and Tribunals Service has launched an investigation into the error. Senior judges say steps will be taken to prevent any repeat of such a mistaken release.
