How the Igbo Ugo Eagle Became Nigeria’s Symbol of Unity
We trace Ugo the eagle back to the Nri Kingdom around 900 AD. It was a mark of truth and law worn by Ozo men, and the British Museum holds evidence of its use long before 1914. After early British invasions, Igbo never hid Ugo. In 1960, when Nigeria chose a national emblem, we gave our eagle to the nation. Today it flies on our coat of arms and on the Super Eagles jersey. Before 1914, Igbo, Yoruba and Edo shared roots and related languages. When we offered Ugo for One Nigeria, we meant peace and unity for all. Now in 2026 we ask: if Igbo gave our eagle for unity, why is conflict still with us? We share one root and one eagle. Let us choose peace together.
