Delay in Pipeline Surveillance Contracts Threatens Oil Theft Resurgence, MOSIEND Warns
The Movement for the Survival of the Izon Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta (MOSIEND) has raised alarm over delays in renewing pipeline surveillance contracts. The group says the pause risks erasing recent successes in fighting crude oil theft and could deepen economic losses. MOSIEND highlights that firms like Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited and Tantita Security Services cut oil theft by over 70% in key waterways. They also created jobs for thousands of youths, offering lawful livelihoods and reducing illicit activity. The group warns that prolonged delays could expose pipelines to vandalism, environmental harm, and social unrest in host communities. They stress the need for strong coordination between local surveillance contractors and security agencies. MOSIEND calls on the Federal Government to renew contracts based on performance and national interest. They urge swift action to safeguard oil infrastructure, protect livelihoods, and sustain stability in the Niger Delta.
