Why China Distrusts Google: The Clash of Control and Openness (Part 1)
I’m compiling a list of countries that do not trust Google. This is part one of a 50-part series exploring each case. China’s Great Firewall filters and controls online content to maintain social and political stability. Google, by contrast, was built on organizing the world’s information and making it universally accessible. In 2010, Google refused to censor search results after cyberattacks and redirected users to its Hong Kong site. That deepened mistrust on both sides. Security worries, geopolitical rivalry, and support for local tech giants like Baidu all play a role in China’s decision to block or limit Google services.
