Football: Devil’s Game or a Platform for the Gospel?

Football: Devil’s Game or a Platform for the Gospel? — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Many preachers warn that football is a godless game leading fans to hell. They say anyone involved must repent or face eternal punishment. This reminds me of pastors in the 80s who branded television as evil, only to later admit their mistake and use TV to spread the Gospel. It shows how important it is to ground our teachings in Scripture rather than emotion. Football, like money or media, is a neutral tool. It can serve dark agendas or point people to Christ. We’ve seen players refuse to promote causes that clash with their faith and others use the pitch to share God’s love. I almost quit being an Arsenal fan until God showed me the souls in football. I even wore a custom “JESUS 1” jersey to spark conversations. For me, Jesus is always number one, even in sport.

I agree that branding football as a gateway to sin feels more like scare tactics than real faith guidance.

This feels a lot like the past controversy over television, where preachers first condemned screens before embracing them for ministry.

Branding football as evil could alienate many believers who find community and discipline in the game, rather than rescue them.

Churches might organize gospel halftime talks at local matches, using the football platform to reach fans with faith-based messages.
