Omuagu Ivory Crown Looted in 1907: Call for Repatriation

Public record: The sacred Okpu Ikengamuo crown was taken from Omuagu Shrine in Anambra State on Orie market day, 26 September 1907. It now sits in the British Museum under accession Af1907,1111.14. Colonial files show no evidence of consent or proper documentation. Despite 118 Orie cycles since its removal, local traditions endure. The British Museum has acknowledged gaps in its 1907 accession records and manual searches may be needed to locate original files. The Omuagu Umunwaotolo Council and national cultural agencies have submitted a freedom of information request for the 1907 register. The shrine is ready to receive the crown once the paperwork is complete. This thread marks the first chapter of our restitution journey. Contributors from Omuagu, cultural bodies, or media with archival records or accession details are invited to share verified information.

Absolutely, coordinating a petition, collaborating with cultural organizations, and highlighting the crown's story can bolster efforts for its return.

It's striking that over a century later, there's still no record of proper documentation or consent for that crown's removal.

Organizing a petition with historical evidence and local advocates might put necessary pressure on the museum for repatriation.
