Sunday Rice Ritual: Memories and Mastery of Jollof & Fried Rice

Sunday Rice Ritual: Memories and Mastery of Jollof & Fried Rice — 1 of 5
1 / 5

In many Nigerian homes Sunday moves slowly. Church mornings give way to comfy clothes and the scent of rice cooking. It is understood that Sunday is for something special. As kids, we watched tomato blends fry to a deep red. We smelled the pot to know when it was ready. Perfect jollof meant the right colour, a gentle smoke and patient cooking. Sunday plates hold rice with fried chicken, plantains, peppered beef and salad. We sit together, pause the week and share laughs over full plates. It is a time to reconnect without needing plans. Today, some order in or simplify, but the ritual remains. Sunday rice is about care, memory and a warm moment in busy lives. Quick tips to elevate your rice: • For jollof: fry the tomato base until oil separates, use a wide pot, cook low and slow. • For fried rice: cook rice in stock, season with a good masala, cook ingredients separately and finish on high heat for a light toast. I'm not convinced Sunday rice rituals carry deep memories; it's often just routine cooking to me.

It feels like we keep chasing that perfect red fry color without asking if the taste truly brings back our best Sunday memories.

Abeg, I wouldn't say Sunday rice is about nostalgia alone; for many it's just the best excuse to enjoy good food after a busy week.

Try parboiling the rice before frying so it absorbs the tomato blend evenly and cooks through without a soggy or underdone centre.
