Community Solar Farms: Can Nigerians Fund Their Own Power Supply?
I’m considering the commercial viability of independent solar farms in Nigeria. Regulations grant power credits, not cash, and maintenance costs and ROI periods for a 200-panel setup are unclear. Nigerian communities already self-fund roads, security, and market cleanups. Why not partner with discos and local governments to build solar farms? One possible model: 1. Engineers estimate power needs for a community (e.g., 20 kW for 500 apartments). 2. Residents pay ₦60 000 each over 12 months to cover a ₦30 million setup. 3. Discos maintain the farm with prepaid meter revenue and employ local engineers. 4. After five years, extra earnings could support poorer neighbourhoods. This approach could reduce disco costs, boost revenue, create jobs, and deliver reliable power. Is this plan practical and scalable?
