Lagos State Holds Workshop to Strengthen Social Protection for Vulnerable Families

Lagos State Holds Workshop to Strengthen Social Protection for Vulnerable Families

Thousands of vulnerable families in Lagos rely on government support to weather hardship and build a better future. To improve this assistance, the State Government has launched a workshop to help Ministries, Departments and Agencies integrate global best practices and social protection principles into their programmes. At the Social Protection Policy Onboarding and Adoption Workshop, Mrs. Olayinka Ojo from the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget highlighted the need for collaboration, better targeting and stronger accountability. Participants were encouraged to use the State’s Single Social Register and measure impact by asking whether interventions improve education access, economic resilience and gender inclusivity. Mr. Yusuf Semiu of the Social Protection Coordinating Department and Mr. Tayo Oseni of the Bureau of Statistics urged agencies to align local programmes with global standards. They described social protection as a key pillar of sustainable development alongside education, healthcare and economic growth. For many Lagos residents, these policy efforts represent more than meetings—they are the foundation for practical support in food, healthcare, livelihoods and protection during emergencies.

Absolutely, working with community leaders and grassroots networks ensures the workshop reaches the most vulnerable families.

It's encouraging to see global best practices mentioned, but workshops often struggle to translate plans into real support on the ground.

I wonder if layering another workshop actually adds value, or if resources would be better spent directly improving existing social services.

Engaging local community leaders early can boost trust and help tailor the support measures to each area's unique challenges.
