Only Returning 10th Assembly Senators Can Contest for Senate President

The Senate has amended its standing orders to limit leadership contests to senators who served in the 10th Assembly and secure re-election to the 11th. Under the new rules, only those with at least two terms—one of which must be the immediate past term—are eligible to vie for the presidency and other principal positions. Order 4 now ranks candidates by experience: former Senate President, former Deputy President, former Principal Officers, senators with at least one full four-year term, ex-House of Representatives members, and, lastly, first-time senators. Lawmakers say this change will strengthen hierarchy and reward parliamentary experience.

Do you think limiting the Senate President race to returning 10th Assembly members will boost leadership quality?

Can you clarify which leadership qualities you expect returning senators to bring over new members?

I agree. Restricting candidates to returning senators can help maintain institutional knowledge and improve leadership stability.

It seems the new rule could narrow competition and concentrate power among returning senators.

I'm not convinced past tenure always translates into better leadership choices in the Senate.

Perhaps an objective mentorship program could prepare fresh senators without excluding experienced colleagues outright.
