Jos North Indigeneity Ruling Sparks Nationwide Debate
A June 9 High Court decision in Jos North ruled that a woman born and raised in the city can claim a Certificate of Indigeneity, declaring the state’s Resident Certificate system unconstitutional. The Hausa community has hailed this as a major win for rights and equality. But the Afizere, Anaguta, and Berom indigenous groups view it as an attempt to overwrite their ancestral heritage and fear fresh ethnic tensions. The Berom Educational and Cultural Organisation has welcomed the judgment—on the condition that its principles be applied uniformly across all states. They argue that if birth and parental ties grant indigene status in Plateau, the same must hold in Kano, Lagos and beyond. Without a constitutional amendment to establish equal residency rights nationwide, many warn this local ruling could ignite conflict rather than resolve it. What do you think Nigeria should do next?
