Journalists Urged to Promote Unity Through Responsible Reporting
The Africa Polling Institute called on journalists to lead efforts in promoting social cohesion and national unity at a two-day workshop in Abuja. Supported by the Ford Foundation, the training covered social cohesion reporting, data-driven journalism and storytelling based on the Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey. Prof. Bell Ihua defined social cohesion as the willingness of citizens to cooperate for collective survival and prosperity. He highlighted trust in institutions, social justice and active civic participation as key pillars. He warned that weak cohesion fuels insecurity, lynching and distrust in government systems. Trainers also urged media professionals to avoid ethnic stereotyping, improve welfare and diversify skills. They emphasized that responsible, inclusive reporting can strengthen national unity.
