Jos Group’s Planned ‘Sarkin Yakin Jos’ Title for Baba Akawu Sparks Traditional Authority Dispute
A controversy has emerged in Jos over plans by the Forum for Concerned Jos Community Elders and Stakeholders to confer the title of Sarkin Yakin Jos on Rt. Hon. Baba Akawu. The group said the Hausa/Fulani community endorsed the recognition for his service, commitment to justice and support for humanity. One Plateau, One Voice has rejected the planned conferment, describing it as unauthorised and capable of worsening ethnic tension in Plateau State. The group argued that traditional titles connected to Jos can only be created or bestowed by recognised traditional institutions of the Afizere, Anaguta and Berom communities. It has called on security agencies, including the police, DSS, NSCDC and the Special Task Force, to prevent any possible breakdown of law and order. The proposed award ceremony is scheduled for August 8 in Jos.
