Security Woes: 60% of Tinubu Backers Feel Less Safe Under His Government
A recent GAIN poll shows about 80% of Nigerians feel less secure today than five years ago. Notably, 60% of those who voted for President Tinubu in 2023 now say they feel less safe since he took office. GAIN’s director warns that security has become a make-or-break issue for the 2027 elections. He says any campaign must address both security and the economy to connect with voters. The data also reveal growing candidate loyalty. Some 75% of Peter Obi’s 2023 supporters would back him again regardless of party, compared with only 35% for Atiku Abubakar. Economic pressures and widespread insecurity are driving more middle and upper-class Nigerians into the political conversation. The poll suggests this convergence of challenges fuels a strong desire for change ahead of the next election.
